Aim: This study aims to explore the perceptions, attitudes, and knowledge of the Pakistani population towards biotechnology and to identify the demographic factors influencing these perceptions.
Methodology: A cross-sectional survey was conducted from January 2023 to December 2023. Participants were categorized based on demographics such as age, gender, education, and residency. Statistical analyses, including chi-square tests and ANOVA, were performed to identify associations between familiarity with biotechnology and demographic factors.
Results: Two-thirds of the participants were from urban areas, with the largest age group being 18-25 years (44.4%). 69.1% of respondents reported familiarity with biotechnology, but only 18% could accurately define it. A significant association was between familiarity and education level (p < 0.05). Support for biotechnology applications was higher in healthcare (84%) compared to the food industry (46%), with ethical concerns and perceived risks noted by a subset of the population.
Conclusion: The study revealed high levels of familiarity with biotechnology among the Pakistani population, influenced by education and socioeconomic factors. However, ethical concerns and risks remain prevalent. Strategic investments, public education, and regulatory reforms are essential to harness biotechnology’s potential for societal and economic benefits. This research in Pakistan identifies critical knowledge gaps and underscores the importance of further studies to deepen understanding and guide policy development.
