Abstract

The Arctic permafrost, which covers a quarter of the northern hemisphere, contains ancient viruses and bacteria that have been frozen for millions of years. However, as the climate warms, the permafrost thaws and releases these microorganisms into the environment. Some of these viruses, also known as zombie viruses or Methuselah microbes, have been isolated by researchers and shown to be still infectious even after being buried for thousands of years. These viruses pose a potential pandemic threat, as they could infect humans with diseases from the distant past that our immune systems may have never encountered. In this article, the current state of knowledge on the zombie viruses, their origin, diversity, infectivity, and impact on human health and the environment are highlighted, along with the challenges and opportunities for monitoring, prevention, and control of these emerging pathogens, as well as the role of social media and public education in raising awareness and combating misinformation
